What did we Do With the #ReallyFlexable Discussion on Twitter?
On the 23rd of June this year, we ran a discussion that was focused on understanding what those who have arthritis really feel like. For quite some time now, arthritis has not really been treated or considered a major life changing disease. It has been an ailment considered synonymous with age but what if we told you that is not entirely true? Arthritis has nothing to do with age, gender, or any of the other roles here. Yes, it is found that women are at the greater risk of it because of osteoporosis but that doesn’t mean that the men are spared. And it does change lives. Suddenly one is not capable of doing as much as they used to. Pain become a regular part of life. Getting out of bed is longer as easy as it used to be. Exercise has to be a routine or the pain will get the better of their ability to move around. In some cases, they are no longer capable of doing the things they love and in some unfortunate but severe cases, the wheel chair becomes a requirement. The aim of this discussion was to get those who knew what it was like to live with the constant pain to talk about it. And we are rather glad to say that we did get a few talking! Here are the questions we posed to them and what they had to say to us in return.
Question 1: What is your motivation to keep moving with arthritis?
In most cases, the reply was synonymous with the fact that if they didn’t do it today then in all possibility one day in the future they would never be able to move again. The consensus was that since they were stuck with it anyway, they might as well have a few laughs about it while they continued to fight it. That is the spirit of a true fighter!
But one story did catch our eye and was that of Nicola Burton-Wilde. She is in her forties today but was first diagnosed at the age of 29. She is the mother of 3 beautiful kids who were just a few years old when they found out. For a brief period, she was even put in a wheelchair due to her arthritis. But she beat it! She is back on her feet today with the love and support from her 3 angels as she put it! This brought tears to our eyes. If you are having an especially bad day, then remember that if Nicola (@bbessex69) could beat it then so can you!
Question 2: What are the early symptoms that one should keep an eye out for arthritis?
Nicola put the all the very basics in one tiny tweet and sent out to us! Here is what she said.
Question 3: What are the diet recommendations that have helped you and can help others too?
In most part, diet as in the kind of foods to eat and avoid have not really paid off for many but there are so additions that to the diet that helped a few of them. Here is what they said to us!
Question 4: What is your preferred kind of exercise and what do you think works best?
Of course, by now, we all know that a workout routine is a must to stay active. But what works we asked everyone. And these are the responses we got.
Tanushree said that she has watched her aunt manage arthritis for long and yoga has helped a great deal!
Question 5: What are the daily care tips that you recommend for everyone?
A lot was said but once again, Nicola stole the show when she tweeted back to us saying this!
Do you think we have managed to raise some awareness about arthritis? Do tell us in the comments below!
